The technically correct term for closed cell sponge rubber is expanded rubber. The cells are like individual balloons, holding gas and not allowing moisture to pass through them long as the cell walls have not burst.

It is recommended that heavy objects are not placed on top of this item for long periods of time. Heavy weights can cause indentations that may or may not recover.
